Photo Quatrains

Photo Quatrains began during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. I began to explore the alleys in my old San Diego neighborhood in the attempt to stay safe from others. I found them to be a rich treasure-trove of detritus that changed every time I walked down them. And I was fascinated with what we choose to abandon and hide.

I began to arrange them into grids of four images, composing them as I would a poem but by color, geometrical lines and graphical shapes. They were a continual surprise - as was the title that came to me in the middle of the night: Photo Quatrains.

For the creative artist there is no impoverishment and no worthless place.
— Rainer Maria Rilke, "Letters to a Young Poet"
